These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
