a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
