The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 but We see it near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
