The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Eager to roast; 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
