Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 keep vigil the night, except a little 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 or add to it a little; and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion - 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while. 11 Indeed We have heavy fetters and a blazing fire. 12 And a food that choketh and a torment afflictive. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 So how will you save yourselves, if you disbelieve, on a day that will turn children old? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
