In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof 3 or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly; 4 Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. 5 [and,] verily, the hours of night impress the mind most strongly and speak with the clearest voice, 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 And a food that choketh and a torment afflictive. 13 on the Day when the earth and the mountains will be convulsed and the mountains will [crumble and] become like a sand-dune on the move! 14 Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger, 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 This is a reminder. Let anyone who wants, seek guidance from his Lord. 19
