In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Stand up in Prayer by night, all but a small part of it; 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. 5 Indeed getting up in the night is tougher, and the words flow with strength. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 Verily this is an admonition; let him therefore, who will, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
