The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 And children present [with him] 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
