The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
