The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
