The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
