The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 And all abomination shun! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
