He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 to him thou attendest 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 You neglect. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Noble and pious. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruit and grass - 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
