Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn, 1 and the ten nights! 2 Consider the multiple and the One! 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
