Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And [by] ten nights 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 So enter among My servants, 29 into My Paradise. 30
