Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 and ten nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
