Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
