Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Enter among My servants 29 And enter into My garden. 30
