The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphaned relative 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
