The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 in which you are now living 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
