The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
