The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees everything? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 A forelock that lies, is sinful. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
