The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 What is your opinion regarding him who forbids 9 A slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 What do you think? Have you seen if he belies and turns away, 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Yes certainly, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock. 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers), 17 We will now call the guards! 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
