Those who were left rejoiced at their staying behind the apostle of Allah, and they detested to strive hard with their riches and their lives in the way of Allah, and they said: march not forth in the heat. Say thou: hotter still is the Hell-Fire. Would that they understood! 81 So let them laugh a little and (they will) cry much as a recompense of what they used to earn (by committing sins). 82 When God brings you back safely and a group of hypocrites ask you to make them exempt from taking part in the battle, tell them, "Never march with me and never fight with us against any of the enemies (of God). You chose to linger behind the first time, so this time stay behind with those who are of no help in the battle." 83 And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dieth, nor stand by his grave. Lo! they disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while they were evil-doers. 84 Nor let their wealth nor their (following in) sons dazzle thee: Allah's plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and that their souls may perish in their (very) denial of Allah. 85 When a Sura comes down, enjoining them to believe in Allah and to strive and fight along with His Messenger, those with wealth and influence among them ask thee for exemption, and say: "Leave us (behind): we would be with those who sit (at home)." 86 Pleased are they that they should be with the women sitters-at-home, and their hearts are sealed up, so they understand not. 87 But the Messenger and those who believed with him struggled with their wealth and their selves For them awaits goodness and those are the winners. 88 Allah has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them; that is the great achievement. 89
