۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 when he said to his father and his people, 'What are these statues unto which you are cleaving?' 52 They answered: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said: hast thou come unto us with the truth, or art thou of those who sport? 55 Abraham replied, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them, and I bear witness to that. 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 So he broke them to pieces, (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it. 58 'Who has done this to our gods' they exclaimed. 'He must surely be a harmdoer' 59 They said, 'We heard a young man making mention of them, and he was called Abraham.' 60 They said: "Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may testify." 61 They said, "Art thou the one that did this with our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said: Surely (some doer) has done it; the chief of them is this, therefore ask them, if they can speak. 63 Then gathered they apart and said: Lo! ye yourselves are the wrong-doers. 64 Then were they confounded with shame: (they said), "Thou knowest full well that these (idols) do not speak!" 65 He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and those you worship besides God! Will you not understand?" 67 They said: "Burn him and help your aliha (gods), if you will be doing." 68 We (Allah) said: "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!" 69 They wished to entrap him, but We made them greater losers. 70 We saved him and Lot, and brought them to the land which We had blessed for all the worlds. 71 And We gave him Ishaq and Yaqoub, a son's son, and We made (them) all good. 72 and made them leaders who would guide [others] in accordance with Our behest: for We inspired them [with a will] to do good works, and to be constant in prayer, and to dispense charity: and Us [alone] did they worship. 73 And (as for) Lut, We gave him wisdom and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town which wrought abominations; surely they were an evil people, transgressors; 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy, truly, he was of the righteous. 75
