Light (Al-Noor)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ A sura which We have sent down and which We have ordained in it have We sent down Clear Signs, in order that ye may receive admonition. 1 The woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. Let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment. (This punishment is for unmarried persons guilty of the above crime but if married persons commit it, the punishment is to stone them to death, according to Allah's Law). 2 Let no man guilty of adultery or fornication marry and but a woman similarly guilty, or an Unbeliever: nor let any but such a man or an Unbeliever marry such a woman: to the Believers such a thing is forbidden. 3 And as for those who accuse chaste women [of adultery,] and then are unable to produce four witnesses [in support of their accusation,] flog them with eighty stripes and ever after refuse to accept from them any testimony - since it is they, they that are truly depraved! 4 except that of those who afterwards repent and reform themselves; God is All-forgiving and All-merciful. 5 And (as for) those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, the evidence of one of these (should be taken) four times, bearing Allah to witness that he is most surely of the truthful ones. 6 And the fifth [oath will be] that the curse of Allah be upon him if he should be among the liars. 7 And the punishment shall be averted from the woman if she bears the testimony four times by the name of Allah, that the man is a liar. 8 And the fifth (time) that the wrath of Allah be on her if he is one of the truthful. 9 And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His mercy unto you and that Allah is Relenting, Wise, ye had been lost. 10
