We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?" 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 But when they roused Our anger We inflicted retributive punishment and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
