Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
