Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
