Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
