The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Allah's is the last and the first. 25
