The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he approached and descended 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names, named by you and your fathers. Allah has not sent down any authority for them. They follow conjecture and their soul's desire, eventhough the guidance of their Lord has come to them. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
