The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Star when it setteth, 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 then came down close 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
