A multitude of those of old 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
