A multitude of those of old 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
