A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
