A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
