a multitude of the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
