The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Dragging by the head, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
