The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
