The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
