He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And whereas he fears, 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what has God created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 olives, dates, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 but others will be gloomy 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
