He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attend to him, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And whereas he fears, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We pour water in showers 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olives and palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
