He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And whereas he fears, 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 In honored books, 13 exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Dust shall cover them 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
