Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn; 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 'O soul at peace, 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
