Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 And the ten nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
