The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
