The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
