The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 by the night, when it envelops it! 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 6 And a soul and Him Who perfected it 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 God is not afraid of the result of what He had decreed. 15
