The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds). 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the basest of them broke forth 12 And the messenger of Allah said: It is the she-camel of Allah, so let her drink! 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
